About Us

When I first moved to the Loire Valley in 1995 I was amazed to discover the intensely different flavours of unoaked wine”.

This was a real eye-opener to me as for several years I had suffered from wines which were:
  • too blousy,
  • too heavy,
  • too overpowering,
  • too strong on alcohol, and worse…
  • too full of chemicals (which gave me a horrible headache the next morning)!

I didn’t know it at the time but this discovery was to change my life.

Back in 2006 there was a European law case going through the courts to try to legalise the purchase of wine in one country (say, France) for delivery to another European country (say, the UK) without having to pay destination duty and taxes (only the duties in the country of departure which are generally much lower in wine producing countries).

Before the final ruling was made, I had already worked out how I was going to set up a business taking this new decision into consideration so that people in the UK could discover these wonderful wines just as I had.

As it happened, the European court ruled against it - but then I thought, HEY! Why not set it up anyway - just using a base in London rather than a base in France.

As my wines have grown in popularity and the business generated income, Amanda’s Wines has grown from a hobby (some would say an obsession), to a part time job, through to a fully fledged, time-consuming, business.

Why Amanda’s Wines?
This site is dedicated to helping wine lovers, who are bored with uninteresting wines, discover our delicious unoaked wines without making a huge hole in their pocket!

We carefully select our wines from growers whose families have worked the land for centuries. Their vineyards are situated in the heart of the Loire Valley, amongst the most fabulous châteaux, forests, fauna and flora; and their passion for wine shines through in the exquisite selections made available to you through this website.

I set up the business with my sister, Susanne, in September 2007. Since then many, many people have signed up for our wines and bought them over and over again. (See Testimonials)

As I wanted keep a record of the knowledge I was acquiring, I’ve added many articles, tips, tutorials to the archives on my Blog.

Hi Amanda,
We have loved all the wines you recommended - thank you.

Tony (London) 29/5/2018

Domaine de la Racauderie Vouvray Sweet 2011 - As sweet as a festive honey bee with attitude.
Tim Atkin, MW, December 2015

Domaine de la Guilloterie Sparking Red Fizz - Demi-sec red fizz: Fruity, vibrant, refreshing and gorgeous.  Such a treat with turkey and cranberry sauce.
Olly Smith, wine critic and writer, December 2015

If you're tired of big, rich, vanilla-ey, oaky wines then Amanda is the girl for you because she hates oak and none of her wines ever, ever, ever are aged in barrel.  And the result is they are some of the freshest purest wines in the show.
The Touraine Mesland Tradition Red 2005 is a marvellous blend of youth and maturity, raspberry fruit washed over pebbles with rock dust.  Any barrel aging would have spoilt it.’

Oz Clarke, November 2015

Just to let you know I saw you at the 3 Wine Men event in Westminster 2 weekends ago. Your wine is delicious! Really looking forward to it.
James, (Norwich) 18/12/2013

We went to a friends for a curry Saturday night - so I took the cheverny wine, the sauvignon 2011, the 2009 gamay. There were the three of us drinking - wow the wine made our evening!

Dan, (Cambridge) 25/11/2013

Frank and Sara (Holland) 6/07/2012

Thank you so much Amanda. I'm buying the wine for my thirtieth. I was going to come back (to France) in person but can't find the time. But i loved ur wines so much.  We drank a bottle of your Gamay last night in fact.
Clemmie, London 2/06/2011

Just wanted to say thank you for your hospitality at the Wine Show last weekend.  You were a beacon in a sea of New World blandness and flashy labels! Thank you. PS. your blog makes for an interesting read.
Tom, visitor at The Wine Show November 2010

Wow. Absolutely amazing. I wasn't really one to know anything about a good wine but then I had the wonderful Rose! I then progressed onto the Tourain Unoaked Gamay and I'm hooked.
I'm now hoping to see you at the Taste Festival in Regents Park in London this year to top of my supply.

(Jason, Surrey) 26/05/2009

I would like to thank you for the time you spent recently with us, I purchased some of the Sauvignon Vieilles Vignes white and can say having tried it, WOW. Many thanks again for your fantastic wines made all the better through your dedication and deep interest. Regards Darrell, (Darley Dale) 22/05/09

I’m very pleased to tell you my wine was delivered today, so you were as good as your word that indeed this offer would “beat the Budget” literally! Many thanks for your great service! My wife and I very much enjoyed the 1st bottle of the Sauvignon and look forward to many repeats through the summer. Tim, (London) 21/04/09

...just to say that the wine arrived this lunchtime...I am much impressed...have a fine weekend...
cheers...Martin (Brighton) 14/03/08

Have started on your wonderful Gamay and brings back great memories of our cycling holiday.
Yours, Chris and Nicola ( Bristol) 9/01/2008

Glad its going well and will let the troops know and talk the wine talk as you are cheaper than what we all buy at tesco and much more classy, elegant, tasteful and chemical free.  Makes drinking merry again instead of painful.
Louise (London) 12/12/2007

Hello :-) No enquiry, just to let you know that … your wines simply delicious! Thank you very much for this and congratulations on your website.
Regards, Heidi ( Hastings) 01/12/2007

Many thanks for your beautiful wine that makes life a pleasure for me!
Kerry ( Nottingham) Christmas 2007

Wine was received, and the delivery was spot on - it also arrived sooner than expected which was great.  I decided to share it round the office and gave a bottle to each member of staff to take home... - and it has gone down (literally) very well.
Thanks. Alison (London) 08/10/2007

I am looking forward to enjoying the wine and introducing some friends to a hang-over FREE way to enjoy wine again.  (many have converted to vodka tonics - as UK wine can be so chemically awful).
We will definitely enjoy.

Kind regards. Louise (London) 05/10/2007

Hi Amanda,
I have tried the Cot and the Sauvignon vieilles vignes
and they are both very good!
Félicitations à Jean-Marc!
