Loire Valley Wines are probably the most diversified wines in the world. Our wines are delivered direct to your door in the UK. Amandas Wines to buy online.
They start from the centre of France with the famous Sancerre appellation.
The wines are white, dry and flinty and are made with the Sauvignon Blanc grape.
Continue down river and you come to Orleans and Blois. Around Blois you will find the Cheverny appellation. These wines are light and fruity. The whites are made with a blend of the Sauvignon Blanc grape; the reds are made with a blend of the Pinot Noir grape.
TOURAINE WINES
Just after Blois is the start of the Touraine appellation. Touraine has a large number of varietals. The Touraine Sauvignon white wine is probably the best in the world. The wines are dry and fruity with very slight flinty overtones. The Chenin grape wines are dry and warm with the overtones of honey and pollen. The Chenin grape is better known in the next appellation of Vouvray.
The Touraine rosé wines can be made from any grape variety but usually are made from the gamay or cabernet grapes. However, the pineau d’aunis lends a peppery flavour much loved by the locals.
The Touraine red wines are exquisite for easy summertime wines. They are made from the gamay, cabernet, or côt grapes; or a blend of all the red varietals.
VOUVRAY
Vouvray wines are white and made with the chenin grape.
This varietal is better after a few years. It takes on the softer hues of honey and pollen and can lend itself quite easily to light pudding wines.
Otherwise the sparkling Vouvray is quite famous. The wines are made just like champagne, but very much cheaper.
CHINON
Chinon is known for its red wines. The wines are made solely from the cabernet franc grape and are very different from any other French red wine. Around this appellation are other smaller appellations called Borgueuil, and Saumur. These wines are also made from the cabernet franc varietal.
ANGERS
As you get closer to Angers, you will find the most stunning pudding wines. The appellations are minute and the wines are made from the chenin varietal in tiny quantities. The most outstanding wines are from the tiny appellation of Quart de Chaume and Chaume.
ROSÉ D’ANJOU
The rosé d’Anjou is also world famous. It is made from the cabernet franc grape. It is probably the best rosé wine to accompany any Chinese meal.
MUSCADET
As we near the Atlantic coast we come to the famous vineyards of the Muscadet appellation. The wines are dry and fruity and not a bit sharp. They are made from the melon grape variety. There are high quality Muscadet wines which are left on their lees for up to 40 months. These are known as Muscadet sur Lie.
